BOSTON – More than 1,000 runners will take part in Saturday’s Boston Marine Corps Honor Run 5K saluting Sgt. Andrew K. Farrar Jr. of Weymouth, including his brother, Jason Farrar, a Marine veteran, student and Weymouth firefighter.

The run will take place beginning at 9 a.m. at Carson Beach in South Boston.

Quincy College students, staff and alumni are joining Jason Farrar, a student at the school, to run in support of the Farrar family and all veterans and their families.

Race participants will include active-duty officers and veterans from all branches of the U.S. military, and local law enforcement groups and runners from across Massachusetts.

U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Andrew K. Farrar Jr., a Weymouth native, enlisted in 1998 and served two tours of duty. Farrar decided to stay in the Marine Corps, even after he was accepted into the Massachusetts State Police Academy.

He was killed in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq on Jan. 28, 2005, his 31st birthday.

Designated as a military-friendly school, Quincy College assists students in navigating their educational benefits with the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, and provides a community of support. The school also allows veterans to enroll in either liberal arts or professional program classes at a discounted rate.

Money raised at the Boston Marine Corps Honor Run 5K will benefit the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation, the nation’s oldest and largest provider of need-based scholarships to military children, with particular attention given to those whose parent has been killed or wounded in combat.
