Three Things You Can Do Today to Improve Our Campus and Community
1. Buckle-Up.
Massachusetts is
near the bottom of the list for seatbelt usage. That
means that nearly 4 out of 10 drivers don't use seatbelts.
While some people point at the law that says you MUST
use seatbelts, we're looking at the whole matter differently.
We've spent too much time together putting good ideas
and concepts into your head.we don't want you to hurt
your head at all. In fact, head injuries can devastate
you and create a horrible emotional and financial
burden on those who love you.
Passengers who don't wear seatbelts become projectiles in a car crash. Even at seemingly safe speeds like 30 mph your passengers can be thrown and might sever spinal cords and possibly kill themselves or others.
Face it, we finally know enough to not drink and drive. Let's use seatbelts too.
This is a great opportunity to set a good example for your friends and children. Use your seatbelt and insist that your passengers do the same. You significantly increase the chances of surviving a car crash and avoiding serious injury.
Let's show the rest of the nation that we have common sense to help ourselves and prove that educated people can develop good habits. Think you don't need your seatbelt.Think
Again.
2. Smoke Less.
Reducing your use of tobacco products will offer enormous
health benefits to you. And even if you don’t like yourself all the
time…you
owe it to others to scale back the puffing. As of
March 21, 2005, all doorways, entrances, porches and foyers as well as
the Saville
Garage
are “smoke-free” zones.
This means that you CANNOT smoke within 25 feet of any of these
locations. Administrative fines will be charged to individuals violating
this practice.
Too many people have complained that the doorways to buildings are
cluttered with smokers, and the ground is littered with butts.
You may have the right to smoke outdoors…but you must do it away
from our doors. Second-hand smoke menaces others who may agree with
your right
to smoke, but do not wish to be injured by the smoke.
And while we’re at it…it is just plain nasty to see cigarette
butts all over the ground, in our plants and shrubbery, our custodians do
great work and don’t need to have this additional mess.
Complications from smoking create health problems.
3. Dine and Shop Locally.
Quincy Center offers a wide array of services, restaurants and shops
for you to enjoy. Many of the locations offer discounts if you show your
student photo identification card. Be sure you let these folks know you’re
a Quincy College student. A wide array of good homemade cuisine can be
a healthy alternative to fast food. Small shops with unique items and
competitive pricing right here in Quincy offer hassle-free shopping before
and after classes. In the era of mega stores and giant conglomerates
help out a local merchant by shopping locally.
The faculty, staff and friends
of Quincy College care about you. In and out of the classroom we take
a sincere
interest in your well being.
Together we can do great things. No preaching here, just some advice
from people who love you. Let’s take care of one another.
