Quincy College Shows Support
for Troops, Community with Outdoor Concert
Gusting winds and cloudy skies could not dampen the patriotic spirit
at Quincy College's Tribute to the Troops concert. Over 200 attendees of all ages, many dressed in red, white, and blue, filled the Coddington Hall parking lot for the outdoor musical tribute on the evening of Friday, May 20th.
The crowd, which included a number of families and residents of 1000
Southern Artery, enjoyed the free New England-style
barbecue which kicked off the event. As QC staff members
kept the grill hot and the
sodas cold, children could be seen running beneath
the outdoor tent with festive balloons tied to their
wrists, and neighbors got a chance
to catch up on old times. Some dropped care packages
off for troops in designated donation areas, and others
took the time to include
a thoughtful message in a handmade card. Quincy College
has made arrangements to deliver the care packages
and cards through Operation Interdependence.
"Considering the weather, we're pleased to have seen such a
strong turnout by our neighbors and outpouring
of support for our troops at this event," said
Vice President Tom De Santes. "It's great to be able to build a relationship
with the community in positive ways."
Headlining the evening was the Southeastern Massachusetts Wind Ensemble,
a 50-piece non-profit community orchestra, which includes musicians
from the South Shore. Selections played at the concert included "The Star Spangled Banner," "Strike Up the Band," and "The Chimes of Liberty," in
addition to classic Disney tunes.
