What is Dual Enrollment?

Dual enrollment provides high school students the opportunity to earn college credit from Quincy College while they are still in high school. Students are introduced to the academic expectations and rigor of a college course, while still receiving the support of high school instructors and counselors. Students save both time and money by participating in dual enrollment courses at their high school. Quincy College works with the high schools to ensure that the dual enrollment courses align with the curriculum, learning outcomes, and cover the same content as the Quincy College course.

Additionally, Quincy College faculty and staff support the dual enrollment high school instructors by offering feedback and resources to help guarantee that we are providing dual enrollment students with the best possible academic experience that reflects a Quincy College education. Interested students should work with their high school guidance/school counselor to determine if dual enrollment is right for them.

Benefits of Dual Enrollment:

Cost Savings

On average, students save over $500 per three-credit course when they enroll in a dual enrollment course with Quincy College. Students can also enroll in more than one dual enrollment course in a single academic year, which allows them to earn even more credits and enjoy additional savings on college tuition.

Academic Credits

The credits that students earn through dual enrollment are the same as any other academic credit that is earned in college. To that end, dual enrollment students will receive a Quincy College transcript upon completion of their dual enrollment course(s). So long as the student earns a final grade of a “C” or better, then they will receive Quincy College credits for their dual enrollment course(s). Also, most dual enrollment courses are the equivalent of a three-credit college course.

Transferability

By earning college credit through dual enrollment courses, students can transfer this credit to many four-year colleges and universities. In addition, some high schools offer dual enrollment courses to both high school juniors and seniors, which gives students the opportunity to earn a substantial amount of college credits before graduating from high school. While the transferability of college credit is evaluated by the school that the student is transferring to, Quincy College has several articulation agreements with four-year schools that accept Quincy College credit.

Additionally, Quincy College’s Academic Advisors are available to assist dual enrollment students with any questions that they have regarding credit transferability. We of course also encourage dual enrollment students to continue earning Quincy College credits after high school by enrolling at Quincy College to pursue their degree. With dual enrollment credits, students can jumpstart their education towards their Associates Degree at Quincy College, while receiving the holistic academic and professional support they need to continue their education or enter a specific job industry.

How to get started

If your high school is considering a dual enrollment partnership with Quincy College,
we encourage you to take the following steps:

Begin to consider which courses your high school may be interested in offering as dual enrollment courses. These are often introductory, honors-level courses that students typically need to take during their first year of college.
For example, Precalculus, Anatomy & Physiology, and General Psychology are some of our more common offerings.
Consider the stakeholders within the high school community. Who should be a part of this conversation?
Who will be involved in this initiative?
Think about the instructors who will teach these courses at the high school.
Dual enrollment instructors must meet the same credentials as any Quincy College instructors.

How do students register and pay for the dual enrollment course(s)?

Students will be provided with the link to the online dual enrollment application and registration form. Quincy College often works with the Guidance and/or School Counseling Department at the high school to facilitate the marketing and registration process for students interested in dual enrollment. Students are also able to pay the $350/three-credit or $450/four-credit course registration fee when they complete the online application. Is there a registration deadline?
Although most high school dual enrollment courses run for the full length of the academic year, there are some dual enrollment courses that run for a half year.

Is there application criteria that a student must meet in order to participate in dual enrollment?

Yes, in order to ensure that high school students are prepared for the college-level work and rigor of a dual enrollment course, students must meet the following criteria in order to register for a dual enrollment course:

Minimum unweighted GPA of 3.0, or the high school’s equivalent, or
Meeting the high school’s requirement entrance for honors or Advanced Placement (AP) classes, or
In exceptional cases, the recommendation of a guidance/high school counselor explaining why the student with a GPA below a 3.0 is likely to perform well in college-level work in the particular course at hand.

Do high school students have to attend class at the Quincy College campus?

No, all dual enrollment courses take place at the student’s high school, whether in-person or online. The high school curriculum is aligned with the Quincy College course to ensure that students are still meeting the same learning outcomes and covering the same content as they would if they were taking the course directly with Quincy College.

Do dual enrollment students need to apply to Quincy College after they graduate from high school?

While Quincy College hopes that students consider QC as a viable option during their college search, it is not a requirement in order for the student to participate in dual enrollment. However, our dual enrollment students do often receive additional savings and opportunities if they attend Quincy College after participating in the dual enrollment program.

What opportunities are available for high school parents and families to learn more about the dual enrollment program?

Quincy College often attends high school events intended for parents and families. The College shares information about the dual enrollment program and is available to answer questions from parents and families. Additionally, the College will work with the high school to ensure that updates and information about dual enrollment are regularly shared with parents and families of high school students. In the past, the Quincy College has also hosted programs for parents and families to visit campus and learn more about dual enrollment and other opportunities available to high school students.

Taylor B., Class of 2020

A class I took part in this year was 2D/3D studies. While enrolled in this program, I believe the most significant experience I gained was independent work. Besides a brief explanation in the beginning of class, we were set out to spend our class time however we deemed fit. Our final project, such as a finished clay piece, was to be graded by the end of the term.

Some students simply spent this time on their phone, but I knew that every second mattered. The fruits of my continuous labor, without too much pushing done by the teacher, proved to me that I didn’t need to rely on someone else to get work done. After all, in college, professors will not walk everything out step by step.

I greatly enjoyed this class, as well as the underlying lessons it taught me.
