Quincy College Granite Athletics and Eastern Nazarene College held the first annual Jim Sheets Cup, named in recognition and celebration of the lasting impact and legacy of Former City of Quincy Mayor, Jim Sheets.
The Jim Sheets Cup competition consists of three friendly basketball matches during the Quincy College Granite Men’s Basketball season between Quincy College and Eastern Nazarene College with the overall winner of three games being awarded the Jim Sheets Cup for that year.
On Jan 21st, Quincy College Men’s Basketball overcame a slow 1st half to capture the first Annual Jim Sheets Cup, a three game series with the Eastern Nazarene Men’s Basketball JV team, by a score of 101-95. The Granite were led by Damani Scott’s 33 points and Anthony Peacock’s 22 points and 18 rebounds as the Granite fought back from a 20 point 2nd half deficit to earn its’ 10th win of the season. New to QC Granite, Zack Lebowitz added 16 points in only his 2nd game for Quincy College. Quincy College Granite Head Coach Scott praised the two way efforts of Cam Mason, Greg Thomas, Jerome Stephens, and Korvonne Whitehall in this come from behind victory. The Granite remain atop the Region 21 Eastern conference with a first place, 5-0 conference record.
At halftime, an award ceremony was held with the winner of the Jim Sheets Cup being announced. City of Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch gave opening remarks at halftime along with Quincy College Athletic Director, Jack Raymer. Jim Sheets spoke briefly and presented the cup named in his honor to Quincy College Granite Men’s Basketball Team Captain, Anthony Peacock.
During his remarks, City of Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch reflected on the legacy of Former Mayer Sheets and the personal impact he has had:
” I learned a lot from Jim about government, more importantly in how to treat people. He was the longest serving mayor, until recently. He is a top shelf guy. He lead the city through some challenging financial times. I’m thrilled to honor him tonight and congratulations Mayor Sheets,” City of Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch.
Sheets addressed the crowd of fans, friends, and community members, expressing his appreciation for the event held in his honor:
” I wanted to express my appreciation for all those who made this evening possible. I’m touched from the bottom of my heart. These teams [Quincy College and Eastern Nazarene College] are both my teams.”
Sheets has been a long standing faculty member of Quincy College teaching Political Science. He also taught at Eastern Nazarene College and briefly played for ENC. Sheet’s sons are alumni of Eastern Nazarene College and played basketball for the Lions.
” Jim Sheets has been an integral part of the Quincy community and a strong supporter of the Quincy College Granite Athletics program along with Eastern Nazarene College. This is a small gesture to honor him and his commitment to our organizations,” Jack Raymer, Quincy College Granite Athletics Director.
