Students will have the chance to gain and sharpen the skills they need to work in the aquaculture industry through a program Quincy College is introducing this fall at its Plymouth campus.

Officials say the aquaculture program is the first at a Massachusetts public college or university to combine hands-on training, professional certification, and college credits. The intent is to prepare students to obtain employment in the state’s aquaculture field, and to enhance the skills of existing workers.

Noting that the industry grew from $3.5 million in 2001 to $10.2 million in 2010, officials said there is a pressing need for more education and training for new and existing fish farmers.

The Quincy College program will initially focus on oyster production. Students will explore the principles of aquaculture, small business practices, and coastal zone management. As part of the program, they will be placed in working hatcheries.

The college is also partnering with the town of Plymouth and area business organizations to seek state funding to expand facilities for the program.
